Newcastle United are hot after a striker to add to their attack during the summer transfer window and last week it was reported to Toon were in talks with Saint-Etienne striker Pierre Aubameyang about a possible contract, making it seem as if the Magpies might actually shell out the money needed to get the transfer done.
According to EuroSport France, the Toon made an €18 million bid for Aubameyang, but it was turned down by Saint-Etienne in favor of a reported €20 million bid by FC Anzhi.
If the report is true, it's unfortunate that the Newcastle bid was outdone by the Russian club, but in a way it's good to hear that Ashley was willing to even bid that amount for the striker. It's been reported that Aubameyang would prefer to play for a Champion's League club, but has also made it known he'd like to play in England.
