A late goal from Liverpool, facilitated by former Newcastle men Craig Bellamy and Andy Carroll, felled Everton 2-1 in Saturday's FA Cup Semifinal. The loss by Everton ensures that the cup will be lifted by a Top 6 side, meaning that an extra league spot has opened up in the 2012-13 Europa League. Since Newcastle are virtually guaranteed a finish in the Top 6, their chances of qualifying for some sort of European competition have greatly increased.
It should be noted, however, that the result today does not guarantee anything for the Toon. If Chelsea were to win the Champions League, guaranteeing them a spot in next year's competition, only 3 other Premier League teams would be granted a ticket to the dance. This is still a cause for celebration, as the road is definitely a lot easier from here on out. The only question now is which competition they will have the privilege of playing in. They are currently level on points with Tottenham Hotspur, who sit in 4th, and 5 fixtures remain for all teams involved.
