Shola Ameobi's European legend continues to grow.
Newcastle United lead Bordeaux at halftime in Europa League Group D action, thanks to a goal from captain Shola Ameobi and an own goal by Carlos dos Santos Souza Henrique.
Shola Ameobi's goal, his 13th in European play (during Newcastle's 100th UEFA match), was a result of some nifty work by Gabriel Obertan, who lost his man down the left side and coolly played a low cross with his left foot past the keeper, where Shola was waiting to tap in. Shola was also involved in the own goal, as it was his cross (and Papiss Cisse's presence on the back post) that forced Henrique to try to play the ball, instead sending it straight back past Cedric Carrasso.
Bordeaux have had their own chances, but all of their shots have been blocked or sent straight at Rob Elliot, who has done a fine job taking charge of his back line.
Henrique earned a yellow card for the French side, while Cheik Tiote and Vurnon Anita were both booked for Newcastle. Tiote also went down with an injury, so we may see Gael Bigirimana in the second half as Alan Pardew looks to protect his two-goal cushion.
