Africa Cup of Nations 2012 Live Thread
EDIT 2/4: Reviving this thread for the match today. A Tiote-less Cote d'Ivoire faces Equatorial Guinea, the team that knocked Senegal out, at 1900 GMT. To follow this and other games, make sure you check out SBN's coverage of the AFCON. If Cote d'Ivoire loses today, Tiote comes home and gets to play against Spurs. If not...we'll have to wait until February 25 to see him again. Since Cheik isn't going to be playing, I assume we're all on board with rooting against the Ivorians...
Newcastle have 3 players participating in the Africa Cup of Nations this year: Ivorian Cheik Tiote and Senegalese players Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse. We will be tracking these two nations, both favorites to reach the final, as they progress through the tournament. Newcastle supporters are in the unique position of hoping their players do well while their teams do not - the longer they stay alive, the longer they stay away from the Toon.
Howay the lads?

Hosts Equatorial Guinea defeat Libya, 1-0
Something of an upset. Neither side should advance, really.

Zambia open it up
1-0 in the 12th minute. They’ve done all the work and have been rewarded for it.

Is AFCON two legs or one and done?
Could we end up seeing our striking duo sooner than expected?

Never mind I looked it up.
Doubt Senegal will finish any worse than second of their group even with a loss. Son of a…

Yeah, it would have to be quite a collapse
If one of these teams wins their group and the other comes in runner-up, they’ll face each other in the quarterfinals.

Group play, 1 match against each team in the group
So only three games before they eliminate half the field. The knockout stage is single elimination

They're trying to play a trap, but there's always one guy hanging back
by Robert L. Bishop on Jan 21, 2012 9:24 PM GMT up reply actions
I don’t know why because I don’t think Zambia have the quality to build up a goal against a team like Senegal. By playing the offside trap all Zambia has to do is knock it forward and out run the Senegalese defense who are fairly slow.

Zambia got away with a pretty major gaffe from their keeper...
Ba almost on the scoresheet but for a last ditch tackle from a defender

He's been fine
Put in a decent work rate. I want to see Cisse!

Little late to the game so I only saw the last 3 minutes or so...
had to get a little pick me up on the hardwood

Didn't watch the game, but saw lots of Twitter activity over it

Very very well played game
on both sides.
I see that my speculation that Senegal was going to play an old school 4-2-4 did not end up being correct. Sigh.

Well...not yet.
They have a 2 goal deficit to overcome

Is Senegal's midfield
as bad as they’ve looked in the first few minutes of the second half?

I don't know if I can answer that accurately
I will say that the 1st half wasn’t much different.

Maybe it's an off day...
they seem to be thinking the right things sometimes but not paying attention to their surroundings and ending up playing it right into Zambian players…

Final
Zambia 2, Senegal 1
Ba plays 90, Cisse comes on at 67
Most importantly, no injuries.

Probably not going to watch Senegal today.
Somebody report on how the Dembas do.

I imagine Demba & Demba were disappointed to not do better
particularly as a pre-tournament favorite, but I’m pretty stoked to see them coming back so soon.

Lineup
Cote d’Ivoire: Copa | Boka, Kolo Toure, Bamba | Zokora, Gosso, Coulibaly, Gradel, Yaya Toure | Gervinho, Drogba
Tiote named as a sub

Ivorians off to a decent start
If EG refuse to mark Drogba all game, this isn’t going to be pretty
by Robert L. Bishop on Feb 4, 2012 7:03 PM GMT reply actions
Not really sure what happened
Turned away for a second and now they won’t show the pitch…and now a commercial break? Huh?
by Robert L. Bishop on Feb 4, 2012 7:32 PM GMT reply actions
Noooooooooo
Just stop it Drogba!

Equatorial have been getting their chances
but they’re definitely up against it right now

Gervinho almost scores on a header
Nice tip-over by the keeper. The shot should have had more pace on it, honestly

I hate to say it, but if the CIV manager wants to stop all this counterattacking,
he’s got Tiote on the bench.
by Robert L. Bishop on Feb 4, 2012 8:23 PM GMT reply actions
I can't lie-- haven't been paying attention to the ACON,
Is there a reason that Tiote is on the bench?

Mostly because they're a really deep team
He played all 90 minutes in their first two matches. I’d chalk it up to rest. Yaya Toure and Drogba both sat out of the last one as well.

over Mali. Tiote with a yellow card and played 90 mins.

Wow Zambia wins on pk's.
Too bad for Tiote. But good for Zambia! Who would of thought they’d win it at the start of the tournament!
