Pardew's first signing of the summer: An 18 year-old midfielder in the Ben Arfa mold. Keep 'em coming.
Eighteen-year-old midfielder Mehdi Abeid confirmed Wednesday that he has signed a contract with Newcastle United after completing a successful trial. (The Chronicle) The signing had been rumored for several days but has now been confirmed for the first time. Abeid, whose primary role is midfield but can step up and play forward, was previously attached to RC Lens B and played 12 games for them last year, netting 3 goals. He has also appeared briefly for the French U-17 and U-18 teams.
Abeid is French Tunisian, much like Hatem Ben Arfa, and he credited Ben Arfa - as well as Cheik Tiote - with convincing him to put down his signature. Because there has been no official word from the club itself, it is unknown what his expected role will be at this time, though Abeid mentions training with the reserves while on trial:
I have had contact dating back some time and I visited the facilities there last week. I even trained with the reserve team. The leaders of the club told me about their plans and that they will rely on me for next season. For my part, I intend to give everything to develop in the Premier League.
Thoughts on this guy? Anybody have any good info to share about him?
