Gary Speed has passed away

Devastating news that Gary Speed has committed suicide.

From http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/8918628/Wales-boss-Gary-Speed-found-dead.html

The former Leeds, Everton, Newcastle and Bolton midfielder was found hanged at his home in Chester this morning.

After hearing of the news, Manchester United striker Michael Owen, who lives near the star, tweeted: "Just cannot believe the news regarding Gary Speed. We waved at each other a couple of days ago dropping our kids off at school. I'm numb."

"The force later confirmed that the dead man was Speed."

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death the family have requested that they are left in peace to grieve at this difficult time. A family tribute will be released at a later date but not today.

"Officers went to the scene where a 42-year-old man was found dead. The next of kin have been informed and have confirmed the identity of the man as Gary Speed.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "At 7.08am on Sunday 27 November 2011, Cheshire police was informed of a sudden death at an address in Huntington, Chester.

The Football Association of Wales confirmed the news, saying that Speed's family had authorised the release of the information.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the 42-year-old's death.

Gary moved to Newcastle from Leeds for an at the time huge sum of 5.5 million and went on to play in two FA Cup finals for the Magpies.

RIP Gary you left an indelible mark on Newcastle United.

Just like to share a Gary Speed story

That a fellow taxi driver told me about a month ago,
We where talking about players we had picked up and who we had picked up and to be honest both agreed that the majority in the flesh didn’t cone across great and kind of backed up the stereotype that they had little in common with the working class man in the street (and this wasn’t just the young players one club legend my colleague picked up came across as a real jerk albeit drunk),
But he went on to mention the time he picked up Gary Speed and took him to Alnwick which is about a 30 min drive north of the city,
He recalled picking him and his wife up from a black tie function at one of the city hotels and the both of them getting in the car drunk,
As they pulled away about a half a mile up the road Gary turned round and asked him to pullover at which point he jumped in the front of the car and chatted away all through the journey like he was talking to a close friend not some random taxi driver he’d just met,
There have been many recollections and tributes on the TV and Radio today and the common theme seems to be what a good egg he was and also a great pro who will be sadly missed by so many people.
